How to Renew Your Medical Marijuana Certification in NY or CT
Renewing follows the same telemedicine process as your first certification — here's what to know before your certification expires.
There's no separate "renewal-only" process
Whether it's your first certification or your third renewal, the steps are the same: complete online intake, schedule a telemedicine visit, and receive certification if clinically appropriate. On the intake form, you simply select "Renewal" instead of "First-time certification."
Timing your renewal
Start your renewal intake before your current certification expires to avoid a gap in your registration. Since the process includes scheduling a telemedicine visit, building in a little lead time helps you avoid rushing to find an appointment slot right at expiration.
Consider the 2-year option at renewal
If you've been renewing annually, switching to BuddMD's 2-year certification at your next renewal means one less visit to schedule down the road — for $219 instead of two separate 1-year certifications.
What's different for New York renewals
New York certifications may now run for up to two years, following New York State Senate Bill S3294A (signed November 2025, effective approximately February 2026). There's no card and no separate state fee — your registry ID is simply updated upon renewal.
What's different for Connecticut renewals
Connecticut certifications can be issued for 1 year, 18 months, or 2 years. At renewal, the physician re-enters your certification into the state's online system, and the state emails you to complete your registration, just as with a first-time certification.
Qualifying conditions still apply
For Connecticut renewals specifically, your condition must still be on the state's current qualifying condition list at the time of renewal. If you're unsure whether your condition still qualifies, BuddMD can help you check before you begin.
